So here's the first of this week's blogs! For those who asked about the blog yesterday, you didn't miss it, there wasn't one. Sunday is a day of rest, and plenty of resting I did too!
But I'm back. Not only back to my blog but also back to work! For a lot of people, going back to work is something which results in grunts and groans, kicking and screaming. It's not exactly something that people consider to be a good thing, but it was for me! Going back to work was a dream and something I had been waiting for.
Having had the past 6 weeks off to do nothing, my life had resorted to day time TV and sleep! That's not all I've done, but it played a major part. It's crazy what you do or don't do when you have time to yourself. By the end of the 6 weeks off I was driving myself crazy and was more than ready to get back to my job.
There were so many things I looked forward to about getting back to work. More than anything I guess it was the routine of knowing exactly what is happening each day that I missed. I know, I know. Who would have thought that you can miss the routine of a job? It's the one thing we love to complain about but there is something quite comforting about routine. So often routine is the very thing that people complain about in life however, for me routine keeps me sane and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Having routine gives you some sense of direction, some sort of target to work for. When you are in a routine you know exactly where you've been and have a good idea of what is coming next.
During my time off there came a point where I thought about those people who, unfortunately, aren't in a job. I guess for those people they can understand this idea of having no routine better than most. Although there are other problems associated with being unemployed, such as money and frustration, I would have thought one of the other big problems of being without work is the lack of routine in life. Nothing to work for, no target, no idea what will come next. What a hard situation to be in and I guess, to some extent , I briefly experienced what this is like towards the end of my break, in a very small way. It's simple...People need routine.
At the moment our country is going through a time of high level of unemployment, as well as a high level of people suffering depression. Is it just a coincidence? Not at all! A doctor from Kings College, London, recently wrote;
"If you're unemployed or feeling down, it's really important to set and establish a daily routine as best you can. This gives you a sense of regularity that can help with a depressed mood."
So routine's not so bad after all. In fact routine is good.
And so I end with this thought.
Very often we complain about the routines of our jobs, the routines of life, the same thing day in day out. But spare a thought for those people who don't have the luxury of having routine in their life. Those people who would give anything to be in a place of routine.
The truth of the matter is we, as humans, need routine and even though we complain about it when we're in it, routine can do more for you than maybe you first thought.
So next time you find yourself complaining about a routine, or moaning about your busy life, think about the positive sides to routine. It might even be the thing thats keeping you going!
