Why settle for good?

"If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles."

I don't know about you but I love that moment when a great song is played on the radio that you haven't heard in ages. Maybe it's a classic, maybe it's a song that you can get your groove on with, whatever the track we all have those moments when we just have to start bopping along...especially when you're stuck in a car.

I love those moments in life when you drive past people who are listening to the same radio station as you and they are clearly singing along to every word - just like they are performing at the O2! For a brief moment you can't help but think that some strange voodoo magic is going on. You think to yourself "How on earth are they singing the same song I'm listening too?" Then you realise it's the radio! Ok, so usually I'm the one that's singing along and everyone is looking at me, but we all do it.

On the way home tonight I had the radio on, keeping me entertained. Recently I've started listening to Radio 2. For those of you who are reading this outside of the UK, Radio 2 is a radio station which plays the classic hits as well as the current ones. It must be a sign that I'm getting older!

Anyway, while I was listening to the radio show they began playing a track that I hadn't heard for ages. It's a track that used to be on a 90's mega mix tape that had somehow worked it's way into our music collection at home. Tapes? Remember those things?

I remember as a kid dancing around the living room  with my sisters, thinking we were on some kind of arena stage. The song is a song called "Best things in life are free" by Luther Vandross and Janet Jackson. Here's a link if you don't know it.

What a classic to bop to on the way home! Pure cheese! But it's a classic. As the song blasted out through my speakers it got me thinking about the words of the song, "The best things in life are free".

In life, when we look at the rich and famous, we tend to think that because of their financial status they can always afford the best things. The best cars, the best houses, the best clothes, the best gadgets. Because they have money they can have all the best things in life right?

Well, from most of my research  into the life of the rich and famous that's probably not the case. In fact, even those people who have won the lottery, with life changing amounts of money, often say how many problems it has brought them.

The thing is, although money can buy lots of the good things, there is always a limit to them. There's only so long the car will go before it needs work, there's only so long before the mansion needs some repairs, there's only so long before the designer suits need replacing. Although you can buy good things, they eventually run out. But the best things in life never fail or end. The best things always stay the same.

And so I end with this thought.

Life is filled with lots of things. Things which seem good but are not really the best. We have the clothes, the cars, the houses. All the things that on the outside seem to be the best things, which are fine to have, yet all to often its not too long before those good things start to go wrong, or need repairing.

Very often the best things in our lives aren't things that we can't buy, they're not things we can pick up in Tesco, nor are they things which can be made. Plus they are usually things that don't cost a penny. What are these things?

For everyone there will be different things in life that they consider to be the best. Things that bring them happiness and pleasure in life. Maybe for some of us it's family, maybe friends, maybe those relationships we have with people that even after a long time, stay strong until the end. They are the best things in life, and they don't cost a penny.

Even though we fill our lives with lots of 'stuff', what's important is that we fill our lives with the right kinds of 'stuff', the best stuff! Those things that will never rot, never break and never fail.

Today, think about those things you have in your life that are the best things to you, and remember, don't settle for good, strive for the best!
